SEO in 2026: what still works, what’s changed and what to ignore

Every year someone declares SEO dead. In 2026 the headline is usually about AI: people ask ChatGPT instead of Google, Google answers questions itself, nobody clicks anymore.

There’s some truth in that. Searches that end without a click have grown, especially for simple questions. But people still search when they want to hire someone, buy something or book an appointment. And those are the searches that matter to a business.

So SEO isn’t dead. It’s just less forgiving of shortcuts. Here’s how we see it.

What still works

Pages that genuinely answer the question. This has always been the core of SEO, and it’s even more important now. If someone searches “how long does a kitchen renovation take,” the page that gives a clear, honest answer with real detail tends to win. The page stuffed with the phrase “kitchen renovation” twelve times doesn’t.

A fast, technically sound website. Search engines need to crawl and understand your site easily. That means fast loading on mobile, a clean structure, no broken links, sensible page titles and a working sitemap. Boring. Still essential.

Real authority. Links and mentions from relevant, trustworthy sites still carry weight. One link from a respected industry site is worth more than a hundred from random directories.

Local signals for local businesses. Google Business Profile, consistent listings and steady reviews are still the backbone of local search.

What’s changed

AI answers sit on top of results. Google’s AI Overviews and AI Mode, plus tools like ChatGPT and Perplexity, summarize answers and cite a handful of sources. Being one of those cited sources is the new “position one.” The way in is the same as above: clear, specific, trustworthy content, plus structured data that makes your facts easy for machines to read.

Experience counts more. With so much generic AI-written content out there, search engines lean toward content that shows first-hand experience. Real examples, original photos, named authors with real credentials, specific opinions. Things a content farm can’t fake easily.

Brand matters more. When people search for your business by name, or mention you around the web, it signals that you’re a real, known entity. Strong brands get the benefit of the doubt.

What to ignore

  • Exact keyword density. Write naturally for people. Use the words your customers use, but don’t count them
  • Buying links in bulk. Cheap link packages are a fast way to waste money, and sometimes to get penalized
  • Publishing hundreds of AI pages. Mass-produced pages with nothing new to say tend to get filtered out, and they can drag down the rest of your site
  • Chasing every algorithm rumor. Most updates reward the same thing: helpful pages on a well-built site

How to measure SEO now

Rankings alone tell an incomplete story. Look at the things that pay the bills: calls, form submissions, bookings and sales from organic search. Google Search Console shows which searches you appear for and how often you’re clicked. Your analytics and call tracking show what happens next.

It’s also worth checking how AI tools describe your business. Ask ChatGPT or Perplexity about your service in your city and see who gets named. That’s quickly becoming as useful as a rankings report.

The honest timeline

SEO is slow. Technical fixes can show results in weeks, but content and authority build over months. Most businesses we work with see meaningful movement somewhere between three and six months, with the bigger gains after that. If someone promises page one in 30 days, be wary.

The flip side is that good SEO keeps working. Unlike ads, it doesn’t stop the day you stop paying. Dent & Scratch Direct in Perth is a good example: steady SEO work took their search traffic up 158% and their sales revenue up 163%.
