Local SEO for medical practices: Google, Apple Maps and the listings most clinics forget

Ask a clinic owner where new patients find them and most will say “Google.” They’re usually right. But they’re often picturing the website, when a lot of those calls actually come from the map listing that shows up above the regular results.

Someone searches “dermatologist near me” or “med spa open Saturday,” sees three practices on a map, taps one and calls. They may never visit a website at all.

That’s local SEO. Here’s how we approach it for medical practices.

Start with your Google Business Profile

This is the big one. If you only fix one thing this month, fix this.

  • Claim and verify it, and make sure the login belongs to the practice, not a former employee or an old agency
  • Pick the right primary category. “Plastic surgeon” and “Medical spa” are different things to Google. Choose the one that matches what most of your patients come for, then add secondary categories
  • Fill in everything: hours (including holidays), services, a real description, appointment link, accessibility details
  • Add real photos of the building, entrance, waiting room and team. People like to know what they’re walking into
  • Post updates now and then, like new services, events or seasonal offers

If you have several locations, each one needs its own profile with its own page on your website.

Don’t skip Apple Maps

Every iPhone user who asks Siri for directions or searches in Apple Maps sees Apple’s data, not Google’s. In the US, that’s a big share of your potential patients.

Apple Business Connect lets you claim and manage your listing for free. You can add photos, hours, a logo, action buttons for calling or booking, and short “showcases” to highlight offers. We manage Apple listings for clients in the US, Australia and Ireland, and it’s surprising how many practices have never touched theirs. Some have the wrong hours. A few have the wrong address.

And Bing Places

Bing’s market share is small, so most practices ignore it. But Bing data feeds into other places, including some AI search tools. It takes half an hour to claim your listing and you can import most of it from Google. Worth doing.

Make your details match everywhere

Your practice name, address and phone number need to be identical across Google, Apple, Bing, Yelp, Healthgrades, Vitals, Zocdoc, your website and any directories you’re in. “Suite 200” on one and “#200” on another seems minor. To a search engine trying to confirm you’re legit, small mismatches add up.

Do an audit once: search your practice name, list every listing you find, and fix them one by one. Then keep a single document with the exact approved version so your team uses it every time.

Give each location a strong page

Your website still matters for local rankings. Each location should have its own page with the full address, a map, directions, parking notes, hours, the providers who work there and the services offered at that site. Add LocalBusiness or MedicalClinic schema to help search engines connect the page with the listing.

Reviews drive local rankings

The number, quality and recency of your Google reviews are among the strongest local ranking signals. A practice with a steady stream of recent, detailed reviews tends to outrank one with a handful from three years ago, even if the older one has a nicer website.

Build review requests into your patient journey so they happen consistently, not in bursts. We wrote more about this in our post on handling online reviews.

Track calls, not just rankings

Rankings are nice. Phone calls pay the bills. Google Business Profile shows you calls, direction requests and website clicks. Add a tracked number or UTM tags on your website link so you can see what the listing actually brings in.

The bottom line

Local SEO isn’t one big project. It’s a lot of small things done properly and kept up. The practices that win the map are usually the ones that simply pay attention to it every month.
